Midnight Bell Privacy Policy
Last updated Nov 6, 2026
About this policy
Midnight Bell sends two things off your computer: your ghost boards and your achievements, both to Steam. It doesn't show ads, use analytics or crash-reporting services, or ask for your name or email address.
This policy covers the Midnight Bell game on Steam and this website, dreamtup.games. Steam itself is run by Valve under Valve's privacy policy.
The website is hosted by Cloudflare and counts visits with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which records the pages viewed, the site that linked you here, your country, browser, operating system, device type and page load times. It uses no cookies, and Cloudflare says it collects no personal data.
Who we are
Midnight Bell is made by Dreamt Up Games ("we", "us"). We decide how the data described here is used.

What we use and why
| What we do | Data | Why we're allowed to | How long we keep it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Match you against other players' ghosts | Your Steam ID and ghost boards (see Online ghosts) | Necessary to provide the game (GDPR Art. 6(1)(b)) | Until your next board for the same in-game night and win-loss record replaces it, or until you ask us to delete it |
| Avoid matching you with the same player twice in a run | Steam IDs of the players you met this run | Necessary to provide the game (GDPR Art. 6(1)(b)) | On your computer only; deleted when the run ends |
| Show your achievements on Steam | Your Steam ID and which achievements you unlocked | Necessary to provide the game (GDPR Art. 6(1)(b)) | Kept by Valve with your Steam account |
| Balance the game | Ghost boards already on Steam, counted in aggregate (for example how often each hero or card appears at each in-game night and win-loss record) | Our legitimate interest in keeping the game fair (GDPR Art. 6(1)(f)) | Same as the boards; the counts we keep hold no Steam IDs |
| Answer your emails | Your email address and what you send us | Our legitimate interest in answering you (GDPR Art. 6(1)(f)) | Until your request is closed, then 12 months |
Online ghosts
While Steam is running, the board you lock in for each in-game night (one round of a run, not a real night) is uploaded to a Steam leaderboard so other players can face it as a ghost. Each upload holds:
- your hero, level, in-game night number, wins and losses
- your allies with their items, tiers, enchantments, Scars and card looks, plus your Oaths and Hoard
- a code for the run it came from, and the real-world date and time it was saved
Steam attaches your Steam ID to each upload. Other players' copies of the game download these boards to pick opponents. The game shows them your hero, never your Steam name. Any copy of the game can read these leaderboards, so treat your boards as public.
Online ghosts are part of how Midnight Bell plays, so there is no switch to turn them off. When Steam isn't running, the game uploads nothing and uses boards saved on your computer and computer-controlled opponents instead.
Steam
Midnight Bell uses two Steam features: leaderboards, which carry the online ghosts, and achievements. Valve stores both on its servers. Valve also handles your Steam account, purchases and playtime under its own privacy policy.
The game doesn't read your Steam name, friends list, location or payment details.
Data that stays on your computer
The game keeps these on your computer and never uploads them:
- your current run, deleted when the run ends
- the boards you've locked in, used as ghosts when Steam isn't running
- your collection, achievement progress, hints seen and settings
- a log file for troubleshooting
On Windows the files are in %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\Dreamt Up Games\Midnight Bell, and settings are in the Windows registry under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Dreamt Up Games\Midnight Bell. Uninstalling through Steam may leave them behind; delete that folder and registry key to remove them.
Crash reports and statistics
The game doesn't send crash reports, usage statistics or hardware details to us or anyone else. If that changes, we'll update this policy before the update ships and say so in the update notes.
To balance the game, we may count what appears on the ghost boards already on Steam, such as how often each hero or card shows up at each in-game night and win-loss record. We don't build profiles of individual players from them.
Who else gets your data
- Valve (Steam) stores your ghost boards and achievements. Valve is based in the United States, so this data may be held there; Valve's privacy policy explains how it handles international transfers.
- Zoho hosts our email. If you email us, your message and email address are stored on Zoho's servers in Canada.
- Other players see the boards described under Online ghosts.
We don't sell your data, use it for advertising, or share it with anyone else unless the law requires us to.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example the EU, the UK or California), you can ask us to:
- tell you what data we hold about you and send you a copy
- correct it
- delete it, which removes your boards from the Steam leaderboards
- stop using your boards for balance counts
Email support@dreamtup.games with a link to your Steam profile so we can find your boards. We'll answer within one month. Achievements belong to your Steam account, so Valve handles requests about them.
If you're unhappy with our answer, you can complain to the data protection authority where you live.
Children
Midnight Bell isn't made for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect data from them. If you think a child has sent us data, email us and we'll delete it.
Changes to this policy
When this policy changes, we'll post the new version here with a new date and mention it in the game's update notes.
